A Conversation with Italy

This body of work is the result of two trips in July of 2017 and 2018 to Riva del Garda in the northern region of Italy known as Trentino whose southern border rests on the north shore of Lake Garda. For centuries, Lake Garda has been a place of convalescence and leisure for northern Europeans. Its strategic location made it a desirable land acquisition and the site of many battles throughout history. Various towns around the lake were inspiration to artists like Albrecht Dürer who depicted the castle ruin in Arco just 6 km north of Riva del Garda and Gustav Klimt who painted the castle at Malcesine on the west shore. This was once the home of the Scaligeri family who ruled in the north during the 13th and 14th centuries.

My choice in location was the result of my love of painting en plein air. The winds that blow from the north in the morning and from the south in the afternoon make the climate on this fresh water lake comfortable despite the high temperatures. While the weeks passed and I continued to work on my paintings, the plein air practice felt like a conversation, a sort of dialogue between me and my surroundings. As the light moved from one side of the lake to the other, the lake revealed itself; in the early morning, the water's surface was still. With the light reflected off the cliffs, the surface of the lake looked like gold. Later, around noon, the Ora wind from the south came to disrupt the quiet and the colors on the cliffs would change to muted pastel shades. Late afternoon brought the hazy shadows from the mountains onto the lake causing dark aqua shades to emerge from the depths and finally at night Lake Garda became a sea of ultramarine blue with the waterfront lights playing on its surface.

While I responded, the scenes I encountered asked certain things of me. I was confronted with an abundance of subject matter from which I had to choose. I had to consider how to simplify the complexity of place as seen through my eyes as a visitor. This ongoing conversation caused me to appreciate how much painting is a sensory experience, and yet one's personal feelings about the environment determine the outcome. I was reminded of the landscape painters of the 19th century who tried to capture the immediacy of the moment while creating an image that was true to the place and realized the value of working this way is that it forces you to be in the present moment and really observe life. In doing so, painting becomes a response to the landscape and to finding your place within it.

Will Millar will be here playing and sing some tunes from his former Irish Rover days. Will Millar, as the former leader of The Irish Rovers has now returned to his first creative love of painting. In this exhibition he is a voyager into the Ireland of his youth, portraying the country in the 1950's, before glass supermarkets and traffic jams clogged up small villages.
This exhibition opens just in time for Halloween, the origins of which come from Ireland over 2000 years ago. The Samhain Festival took place on the night of October 31. The Celts, who occupied the land which is now called Ireland, celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Samhain is an old celtic word pronounce "Sow in".

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes.
When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

Calgary based artist Shelley McMillan exhibits two very different bodies of work. For Shelley, each discipline is integral to the other. Her abstract works give her freedom to explore and play with various mediums, colours, shapes and texture, which in turn help her form and compose her expressive landscapes.

One Artist – Two Visions
Imagination and Reality
My newest works over the past year reflect the desire to create freely, and the need to show reality. My landscapes have always represented the beauty that I see around me. My abstractions represent how I imagine and perceive things; differently, distorted, mildly disturbing, often unrecognizable as anything in particular.
The assemblages reflect perfectly my desire to show off what I find beautiful. Redefining and reshaping human and natural creations that are on their way to destruction. Everything comes and goes. Nothing remains as it was, and the breakdown is what interests me - animal bones, rocks, driftwood, man-made items that are no longer useful for their original purpose or design. Beauty is in every stage of the natural march toward ashes and dust.

Shelley McMillan

The group was formed in Calgary in October 2016 by nine Calgary-based visual artists with the intention to provide the forum for artistic, conceptual and philosophical debates on the current state of contemporary visual culture in Canada and around the globe, and to visually articulate and address their concerns through a series of regular art exhibitions and publication projects.

The inaugural exhibition "Group 9" The Persistence of Vision" features a vast scope of artistic trends and stylistic approaches in the works by nine, well-known Calgary-based artists and the founding members of Group 9. The impressive roster of work ranges from the colour-field abstract paintings by Seka Owen, Errol Lee Fullen and Verna Vogel, through lyrical abstraction of Asta Dale, to the post-Structuralist sculptures by Ron Kostyniuk and abstract sculptural projects by Greg Robb. These works are strategically balanced with the metaphoric works by Jean Pederson (paintings) and Cameron Roberts (sculpture), and the elements of Eastern philosophy and symbology in the works by Greg Pyra.

Over the past 35 years, Seka Owen, RCA, ASA, a Calgary-based painter affiliated at the beginning of her artistic career with Edmonton's School of Formalism has earned a reputation as one of Alberta's and Western Canada's most important, and prolific abstract painters. Her works are composed of assemblages of bright colour, laid over subtly stained grounds. The unusual and often dramatic colour effects that she achieves imbue her works with an expressive quality that sets them apart from those of her contemporaries. Owen's works have often been described as 'post-painterly abstraction', but whatever the term, there is a depth and emotion in her works that transcend whatever category is applied to them.

Steve Coffey has been an integral part of the western Canadian art and music scene for many
years. He has curated traveling exhibitions, created large-scale public sculptures, taught college,
and conducted many workshops and art residencies. His far-flung travels have taken him to
places such as London, England and he has exhibited in Poznan City, Poland. Of the art in these
major centers (along with favorites Berlin and Amsterdam), he speaks of being "visually
exhausted and spiritually inspired" and he recalls the longing to return to the "intricate nuances
and swirling beauty" of the Canadian landscape. He notes such influences as The Group Of
Seven, Emily Carr and Alex Colville to name a few.

After finishing his formal training in 1990 (University of Regina, Master of Fine Arts.) Steve
practiced formalism as a metal sculptor in Edmonton & Central Alberta. Eventually he gave in to
his love of drawing and representation and was seduced by the immediacy and challenges of oil
paint. He began exploring the medium full time in 1995.
Steve has exhibited extensively and his paintings can be found in numerous private and public
collections throughout North America and Europe.

He is also a well-known western Canadian singer-songwriter with a number of recordings that
have received critical acclaim. He and his band "The Lokels" perform regularly and can be heard
on the radio airwaves from commercial to college to frequencies in between. He has also dabbled
in films, one of which was purchased by the arts and entertainment channel Bravo in 2007.
Steve makes his home in Vulcan, Alberta with his partner Barbara and their two daughters Lydia
and Grace.

On Nov. 7th, 2011 Leonard Brooks will be 100 years of age. This exhibition is in honour of his dedication to creating and supporting the arts.

Leonard has lived in San Miguel del Allende, Mexico since 1947. As an official Canadian Naval war artist in World War II, Brooks was highly praised for his work. Recognized worldwide as a premier painter, he has had numerous one-man shows in top commercial galleries and museums in Canada, the U.S., and at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

The author of eight books on art, Brooks has been recognized for his clear delineations of various styles of painting and collage. In Brooks' own words "Art has been my life long passion; a passion that has filled my life with joy and sorrow. But in the end it is our passions that determine who we are."

How wonderful it is that Brooks as a young boy of eight years old began his journey of creativity, and 92 years later continues to create beautiful collages and paintings in San Miguel de Allende.

Raymond Theriault's large scale oils of urban landscapes bring to mind more than the actual locations that he paints. They could be a scene in Calgary or a scene from Winnipeg, yet he brings to mind other places we have been. He brings order (harmony) to urban disorder. Theriault has dedicated most of his painting career to paintings these points in history.

(1938 - 1934) Thomas Mower Martin was one of a handful of artists responsible for the establishment of the Ontario Society of Artists, along with Marmaduke Matthews, F. F. Gagen and John A. Fraser. He organised the influential society in 1872, and eight years later became a charter member of the Royal Canadian Academy. As the first director of the Ontario Government art school in Toronto, he taught artists such as Lucius R. O'Brien, and was also responsible for initiating a life drawing class for professional artists. One of Mower Martin's greatest triumphs was the illustration of Wilfred Campbell's 1907 book "Canada". Martin's numerous renderings of Canadian scenery, taken from original watercolours by him, reflect the text of Campbell in a compelling manner. Martin had previously published two books himself" "Artist's Letters from the Rockies" in 1889, and "Canada from the Artist's View" 1893-5. He travelled via the Canadian Pacific Railway through the Rockies in 1887 and subsequent annual trips for another decade to paint the glorious mountain scenery. Susan Lourie
