York Wilson
Ronald York Wilson
RCA,ALC,CGP,OSA(1907 - 1984)

Born in Toronto, Ontario, York Wilson studied at the Central Technical School, Toronto (1920-1922); at the Ontario College of Art, Toronto; and at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan. York worked as a commercial artist and illustrator (1924-1949) before turning to painting full time in 1950. Working in oil, acrylic, watercolour, ink, charcoal, gouache, mixed media, silkscreen, lithography and Lucite, his subjects include the female nude, figures, abstraction and landscape. His style evolved from social satire (1940s) to semi-abstract works (1950s) to a lyrical abstraction (1960s). He later turned to nonrepresentational work and created a geometric series in 1966-1971.He is also known for his mosaic murals located in universities, hospitals, and office buildings. Both York and his wife Lela traveled extensively around the world including across Canada - east to west, the N.W.T.'s, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Morocco, France, Belgium, The Caribbean, Switzerland, Austria, Hawaii, England, United States, Canary Islands,Greece, Guatemala, Turkey, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Bali,Cambodia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Cyprus, and Japan. York Continuously drew and painted during his travels and received numerous write-ups in the media about his work both at home and internationally. He was President of the OSA (1946-1948). York's work has been exhibited around the world. He exhibited extensively with The Ontario Society of Artists, the Royal Canadian Academy from 1941-1971, and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1931-1963.
