The Collector's Gallery - Fine Canadian Art

 
Robert Ford Gagen RCA OSA CSPWC
(1847-1926)

Born in London, England, Gagen came to Canada and settled in Seaforth , Huron County, Ontario in 1862.He studied in London, Ontario with William Cresswell; and in Toronto with G. Gilbert.He worked with John Fraser at Notman's Studio where he painted photographs.Working in oil and watercolour, he is known for his landscapes and seascapes, as well as portraits, flowers and coloured photographs.After 1890 he worked and painted in the Rocky Mountains producing promotional material for the CPR.
He was a founding member of the Ontario Society of Artists and held the post of Commissioner of Fine Arts, Canadian National Exhibition from 1912-26. He was the son the architect John J. Gagen and exhibited with the AAM from 1880-1910 and the RCA between 1881-1925.His work is in the collection of the AGO and NGC.
