Elizabeth McGillivray Knowles ARCA AWCS OSA
(1866-1928)


Born in Ottawa ( Nee Beech), Ontario, Knowles studied at the Toronto Normal School under F. McGilliray Knowles whom she married in 1890.They travelled and painted in Europe until 1908 when they returned to Canada.They moved to New York City in 1920 and had a summer residence in Riverton, New Hampshire where she later died.Working mainly in oil but also in watercolour, she painted landscape especially barnyard scenes witih poultry.She was a member of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, New York City and a niece of F. M. Bell-Smith.She exhibited at the AAM between 1906-28, the OSA between 1902-25 and the RCA between 1902-28.Her work is in the collections of the AEAC, AGO and NGC.
