Gertrude Eleanor Spurr Cutts ARCA OSA TASL
(1858-1941)

Born in Scarborough, England, Cutts attended the Scarborough School of Art, where she studied under Albert Strange, and the Lambeth School of Art, London, under John H. Smith.She painted in Europe and exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists, and the Society of Women Artists.In 1890 she immigrated to Toronto and continued to paint.She later studied at the Art Students' League, New York (c1900).She went to the art community of St. Ives, Cornwall, England with her artist husband William Malcolm Cutts, in 1909 and stayed for three years.Her subject matter was varied, including landscapes, seascapes, rural scenes, floral studies and still life.She worked in oil, watercolour and pen and ink, and exhibited with the RCA (1891-1929), as well as the OSA, AAM (1894-1912), and CNE.She is represented in the NGA, AGO and HAG.
